Kerala Government Medical College Teachers’ Association (KGMCTA), which had temporarily deferred its plans to go on an indefinite boycott of outpatient clinical services and academic activities in Medical Colleges across the State by one week, has decided to resume its agitation.
On Saturday, the government had come out with a new order, acceding to one of the main demands of KGMCTA, that the anomalies in pay revision, which had resulted in a reduced pay package for doctors at the entry cadre of the Medical Education Service be rectified.
KGMCTA, in a statement issued here, pointed out that even though the new has not fully resolved the salary anomaly in the entry cadre, they welcomed the government’s positive action. It however, expressed its strong resentment and protest that the payment of salary revision arrears due to the Government Medical College doctors since 2026 has been completely ignored.
Despite the issuance of the new order, the government’s continued neglect of the long-pending salary revision arrears of doctors – despite repeated assurances over the years – is totally unacceptable, KGMCTA president Rosenara Beegum and general secretary C.S. Aravind said here on Saturday.
“At a time when the government has decided to fully clear the pay revision arrears due to other State government employees, the continued neglect of Medical College doctors – who had worked tirelessly during the COVID-19 pandemic to save lives – is highly condemnable and unjustifiable. The government cannot show this injustice to doctors,” they said.
In this context, the State committee of KGMCTA which met here on Saturday, decided that the organisation has no option but to continue the agitation.
Though KGMCTA had deferred its agitation, to give the government time to take decisions, it has been continuing its protest through non cooperation with the government and by organising a relay hunger strike at Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College.
The relay hunger strike entered day 12 on Saturday. Doctors from medical colleges across the State have been participating in the hunger strike all these days, keeping up the momentum gained by the agitation.
