A cross-section of residents in Panaiyur, Chennai, launched a demonstration on Friday, objecting to hundreds of cadres descending on the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) headquarters in the locality, blocking access for locals and parking cars haphazardly in the area.

The party, launched by actor-politician Vijay, began distributing applications on Friday for aspirants who desire to contest in the upcoming Assembly elections. A large number of party workers gathered at the TVK headquarters on the outskirts of Chennai to get applications on the first day.

Residents objected to the indiscriminate parking of vehicles encroaching on roads in the locality.

The residents of nearby localities in Panaiyur raised concerns about repeated overcrowding in the area and indiscriminate parking of vehicles encroaching on the roads when party-related activities take place.

They alleged vehicles were parked on the main road, adjacent lanes and in front of houses. They said the roads were blocked due to overcrowding, preventing residents from entering and exiting the locality.

TVK joint general secretary C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar claimed over 10,000 applications have been distributed to ticket aspirants within a span of a few hours on the first day. Due to the overwhelming response, distribution was stopped after a point on Friday and will resume on Saturday and continue till February 14. He urged party workers to collect the forms at their convenience during the stipulated period and not to rush.
