Mamata Banerjee’s visit to Supreme Court was part of ‘scripted drama’: BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged on Wednesday (February 4, 2026) that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s appearance before the Supreme Court was aimed at disrupting the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in her State.

Describing Ms. Banerjee’s visit to the Supreme Court and the Election Commission as a “scripted drama”, BJP leaders said it was a “flop show” as she returned “empty-handed”.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, speaking from his Nandigram constituency, accused Ms. Banerjee of declaring “war” on the SIR. “Mamata is doing all this to derail the SIR process and influence votes based on the 2024 voter lists… She tried to stop the SIR process but failed miserably,” he said, asserting that if the process was disrupted, West Bengal could face President’s rule after May 5.

‘Compelled BLOs’

At a press conference in Delhi, the BJP alleged that Booth Level Officers (BLOs) were “compelled” to upload false documents during the SIR process under Ms. Banerjee’s watch. State BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya, along with Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, said the process was underway in 12 States, with no uproar anywhere else, except in West Bengal.

“In a clandestine manner, she compelled the BLOs to upload false documents into the system,” Mr. Bhattacharya said. “The Trinamool Congress’s agenda is clear: Bangladeshi infiltrators and Rohingyas should remain on the West Bengal voter list; names of the deceased, fake voters, and people whose addresses are on vacant land should remain,” he said.

The BJP leader questioned Ms. Banerjee’s Supreme Court visit, noting that she had not gone to the Anandapur warehouse in Kolkata, where 27 people were recently killed in a blaze and many remain missing, but “travelled 1,500 km to reach the Supreme Court”.

National security concerns

The SIR issue is being raised as the Trinamool Congress knows its “days are numbered”, he alleged. “The people of West Bengal have decided they will not allow this government to continue under any circumstances,” he said.

“There is a total breakdown of the Constitution and machinery in our State, including the judiciary,” he said, alleging that about 300 BJP workers had been killed there since 2016. Highlighting national security concerns over illegal immigration, fake identity cards, and counterfeit currency smuggling, he said the Trinamool government had repeatedly refused to provide land to the BSF for border outposts.

Mr. Majumdar termed Ms. Banerjee’s visit to the Supreme Court and the ECI part of a “scripted drama” and called her submissions in the court a “complete political speech”. He also alleged that errors in the voter data were deliberately introduced by State government employees under Trinamool influence.

Earlier, Mr. Adhikari said the Chief Minister had sought the removal of EC-appointed micro roll observers, in order to impede the SIR process. “The West Bengal government did not provide sufficient qualified officers… That is why the micro observers were appointed,” he said.
