Two from Mysuru dead as boat capsizes near Malpe

Two persons died and two others are in critical condition after a boat carrying 14 persons from Mysuru capsized, near Hangarkatte Ship building area, near Malpe, on January 26, 2026.

The Udupi police gave names of the deceased as Shankarappa, 22, and Sindhu, 23. The names of the critically injured persons were Dharmaraja, 26, and Deesha, 26, the police said.

According to preliminary information gathered by the police, 14 persons from Saraswatipuram in Mysuru, who work in a call centre in Mysuru, boarded the boat at Malpe Delta Beach point.

The boat belonged to Waveriders company and all 14 were given life jackets. However, none of them was wearing the life jacket. Around noon, the boat capsized near Hangarkatte Ship Building area, where the river meets the sea.

All 14 people where shifted to other boats and brought to the shore. Two persons died and two, who survived, were in critical condition, the Udupi police said.
