Forensic report in the death of a National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) aspirant in Patna on January 11 has detected traces of semen on the clothes of teenaged girl.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted on January 16 on the orders of the State government, soon after the aspirant’s post-mortem report dated January 12 surfaced in the public domain, which noted “physical injuries and marks of violence on the body” and stated that “sexual violence cannot be ruled out”.
The girl was staying in a private hostel in Chitragupt Nagar, where she was found in an unconscious state on January 6. She succumbed to her injuries five days later, on January 11, while undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Earlier, police had ruled out sexual assault.
On Sunday (January 25, 2026), the office of Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) issued a press note stating that on January 10, 2026, the family members of the deceased provided some of the clothes of the girl to the police, which were seized. Following the legal procedure, it was sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for examination. During the examination conducted by the FSL, traces of human semen were found on the clothes allegedly worn by the victim.
It further stated, “The FSL is preparing a DNA profile of the same. Accordingly, as part of further investigation, the DNA will be matched with that of the arrested accused as well as other suspect individuals identified by the SIT.”
The victim’s post-mortem report, carried out by the Patna Medical College and Hospital, mentioned that there were multiple crescentic nail abrasion marks, physical injuries over the body and marks of violence.
Further, an action has also been taken against two police officials who were initially involved in the investigation.
“During the review of Chitragupt Nagar Police Station Case No. 14/26, Hemant Jha, Assistant Inspector of Kadamkuan Police station and the Officer-in-Charge of Chitragupt Nagar police station, Sub-Inspector, Roshni Kumari have been suspended with immediate effect on charges of apparent failure in collecting information and taking timely action,” Patna SSP office press note stated.
From the initial days of investigation, the parents of the victims said that their daughter was sexually assaulted, but police had denied the claim. Following the incident, the owner of the hostel was arrested.
On the other hand, the five-member medical board of the Patna-AIIMS, examining the post-mortem report and other circumstances related to the death of a NEET aspirant asserted that the SIT, investigating the case, has not provided all crucial documents to it so far.
Talking to reporters on Saturday (January 24, 2026), head of the medical board, Dr Binay Kumar (Professor-Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, AIIMS) said, “We have not been provided all crucial documents related to the case by the SIT so far… on the basis of which we can draw a conclusion or give our opinion on the case. Documents which have been provided by the SIT to the board, are not sufficient enough…..we are still waiting for some more crucial documents.”.
