The youth wings of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday protested in the State capital and Thrissur respectively over the Sabarimala gold loss, prompting the police to use barricades, water cannons, and tear gas to disperse demonstrators. In Thiruvananthapuram, Youth Congress activists marched to the Assembly, demanding action on the alleged misappropriation of gold from the Ayyappa temple. Activists raised slogans against the State government over the gold case and recent controversial remarks by Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian. Cherian, on January 18, had said that while the RSS promoted majority communalism, the Indian Union Muslim League, a key ally of the Congress, was encouraging minority communalism. A protest was held in Thrissur by the BJP’s Yuva Morcha activists raising the Sabarimala issue. They marched to the office of the District Collector and attempted to remove or scale the barricades.
