In a landmark case highlighting the effectiveness of Lok Adalat, the Guntur District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) on Saturday (September 13) facilitated the settlement of a motor accident claim amounting to ₹1,11,82,343, bringing long-awaited relief to a bereaved family.

The cheque was handed over by B. Sai Kalyan Chakravarthi, Principal District and Sessions Judge, Guntur, in the presence of Syed Ziyauddin, Secretary, DLSA, as part of the day-long Lok Adalat proceedings.

Speaking on the occasion, Judge Chakravarthi cited the case of late Yerradla Srinivasulu, who died in a road accident near Kakutur village in Nellore district in 2020. His family initially filed a claim of ₹85 lakh against United India Insurance Company. The trial court awarded them ₹82,49,202 with 6% interest, but the insurance company appealed the verdict.

Subsequently, the Andhra Pradesh High Court enhanced the compensation to ₹91,74,094 with 9% interest. The family filed an execution petition before the I Additional District Judge, Guntur, but the matter was finally resolved through conciliation at the Lok Adalat. The case was settled for ₹1.11 crore, in the presence of counsels V. Brahma Reddy (for the claimants) and P. Ramanjaneyulu (for the insurance company), along with the manager of United India Insurance Company.

“This settlement is a testament to the speed, efficiency and conciliatory spirit of Lok Adalat, ensuring justice without prolonged litigation,” the Judge remarked.

DLSA Secretary Syed Ziyauddin said the Guntur district recorded the settlement of 908 civil disputes and about 9,700 criminal cases during Saturday’s Lok Adalat, securing the first place in civil case settlements and the second place overall among districts in Andhra Pradesh. The DLSA has constituted a total of 41 benches across the district for this Lok Adalat to bring justice to the victims.
