Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activists disrupted the singing of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) gana geetham (prayer song) during the Kannadiparamba Sree Muthappan temple festival in Mayyil, Kannur, Kerala, on Monday night, alleging that the performance was part of an “RSS-backed agenda” to politicise temple festivals.
The incident occurred when a music group from Thrissur began singing ‘gana geetham’ on stage as part of the festival programme. Midway through the song, DYFI and Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] activists reportedly went on stage and questioned the performers, following which the group stopped the song without completing it.
DYFI leaders claimed that the song was deliberately included in the temple festival to advance what they described as a communal agenda promoted by the RSS.
In a press release, DYFI office-bearers said that such moves must be recognised and resisted by the public.
DYFI Kannadiparamba east regional committee announced that it would organise strong protests against what it termed attempts to communalise temple festivals.
