Left parties condemned the U.S. strikes on Venezuela and the capture of the country’s President Nicolás Maduro on Saturday (January 3, 2026), with the Communist Party of India, the Communist Part of India (Marxist), and the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) all issuing statements condemning the U.S. actions.

CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby condemned the U.S. action, calling it a “naked act of aggression”. Mr. Baby referred to a failed coup attempt against then President Hugo Chávez in 2002, characterising that attempt as a U.S.-backed effort that failed, and said that these strikes would also end in the same fate.

“This is a blind violation of international laws,” Mr. Baby said, calling India’s silence on the strikes “doubtful”.

All India Forward Bloc general secretary G. Devarajan “unequivocally” condemned the strikes and said that the U.S. had “no moral, legal or political authority to attack any sovereign nation under any pretext,” adding that the AIFB demanded “immediate intervention by the United Nations to condemn the U.S. aggression, halt all military actions, and ensure the safety and life of the President of Venezuela.”

Communist Party of India general secretary D. Raja called the strikes “blatant and criminal military aggression” on the U.S.’ part, and said that they were “a gross violation of the UN Charter, international law, and the universally accepted principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference.” In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Mr. Baby called the strikes “an act of international terrorism,” terming the “capture” of Mr. Máduro and first lady Cilia Flores as “kidnapping”.

Mr. Raja declared that the CPI’s “firm solidarity with the Government and people of Venezuela in their just struggle to defend national sovereignty … and the right to choose their own path of development.”
