The three-day All India Sociological Conference on ‘Mobilities and Inequalities: Shifting Contexts; Changing Paradigms’, hosted at SRM University-AP, concluded on Tuesday.

The event featured 35 research committees, four plenary sessions, three memorial lectures and other academic and cultural events with 1,800 participants who shared their research findings, providing new perspectives on sociological issues relating to mobility and inequality.

The series of memorial lectures made significant contributions to the field of sociology. Sociologist and former Professor at University of Hyderabad, Sujata Patel chaired the memorial lecture of Radha Kamal Mukherjee, emphasising the impacts of sociological thought and institution-building.

Former professor of sociology, University of Delhi, Anand Chakravarti’s lecture on M.N. Srinivas underscored the transformative role of fieldwork in enhancing the understanding of social facts, providing nuanced insights into Srinivas’s teachings that enrich the broader discourse.

The Yogendra Singh Memorial Session featured Surinder Jodhka from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, who highlighted the importance of teaching modules in sociology programmes across India.

Prof. Jodhka presented an alternative perspective on India’s historical context within sociological discourse, advocating for a comprehensive understanding of societal complexities.

New convenors and co-convenors were elected for each research committee. Associate Dean-Eawari School of Liberal Arts, SRM University-AP Vandana Swami delivered the closing remarks, while Vice-Chancellor Ch. Satish Kumar emphasised that conferences of this nature were as important as any technology related conference.
