In a shocking day-light dacoity, a gang of five masked men barged into a jewellery shop in Hunsur town on December 28 and looted gold valuables at gunpoint.

The five accused, who reached the jewellery shop on two motorcycles at around 2 p.m., entered the jewellery shop situated in the town wielding a gun and threatened the seven to eight employees present in the shop.

According to Deputy Inspector General of Police (Southern Range) Boralingaiah, who visited the spot, the dacoits threatened the employees and put the gold jewellery in a bag before fleeing.

The exact amount of gold jewellery that was looted is yet to be verified. However, he said a “few kilograms” of gold jewellery were taken away by the looters.

A CCTV camera installed on the premises of the jewellery shop has captured visuals of the robbery. Police officials are verifying the footage.

The jewellery shop’s manager, who was away for lunch when the dacoits struck, returned while the accused were making a getaway. Eyewitnesses said the dacoits fired one round in the air before fleeing from the spot.

Police officials are also interacting with employees, who were threatened by the dacoits, to gather as much information as possible about the accused.

The jewellery shop, which opened in April this year, has four partners and also has branches in Virajpet and Kannur in Kerala.

The jewellery shop is housed in a newly built commercial complex which does not have many tenants. The police is also verifying whether the shop management had posted sufficient private security, but said their immediate aim is to trace the accused and retrieve the looted gold.

Superintendent of Mysuru district police N. Vishnuvardhan also visited the spot.
