Scores of people from various districts led by seers and political leaders took out a protest march and held demonstration in Hubballi on Saturday demanding that the airports at Hubballi, Belagavi, Vijayapura and Shivamogga should be named after eminent personalities.

The protesters marched from Kittur Chennamma Circle to Union Minister Pralhad Joshi’s office near Chitaguppi Hospital in Hubballi highlighting the need to conclude the naming formalities by Republic Day.

They demanded that the airports at Hubballi, Belagavi, Vijayapura and Shivamogga be named after Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna,  Kittur Rani Chennamma, Jagajyothi Basaveshwara and Rashtrakavi Kuvempu respectively.

The protestors held a demonstration and public meeting near Chitaguppi Hospital. N.H. Konaraddi, MLA for Navalgund; Kannda film actor Pooja Gandhi, Basavaraj Devaru of Revanasiddeshwar Mutt, Mansur, leaders of various political parties, including Anilkumar Patil, Shivanand Muttannavar and others spoke highlighting their demand and condemning the delay in naming the airports.

They said the proposed names would honour the contributions of these eminent personalities to Karnataka’s social, cultural, and freedom movements. They urged the Central and State governments to take immediate steps in this direction.

They announced that if their demand is not met before the Republic Day celebrations, they would be forced to intensify the agitation across the State.
