A 29-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death by her in-laws after being accused of being possessed by an evil spirit, in a case of superstition-driven violence in Aland taluk of Kalaburagi district on Friday.
The deceased, Muktabai, a native of Aland town, was married to a man from Maharashtra. According to the police, she had reportedly collapsed at her residence a few days ago, allegedly due to health complications and high blood pressure.
Muktabai’s parents alleged that instead of seeking medical assistance, her relatives, including her brother-in-law and mother-in-law, claimed she was possessed by evil spirits and subjected her to a violent ritual to “drive out the spirit”. She was allegedly assaulted with a wooden club, resulting in severe injuries.
Muktabai was later shifted to a hospital but she succumbed during treatment.
Her mother has accused the in-laws of taking her to Ganagapur village in Afzalpur taluk and assaulting her in the name of superstition rituals, leading to her death. She sought action against all those involved in the crime.
