Members of various voluntary organisations working for the conservation of Thamarassery ghat road have called upon the district administration to adopt immediate measures for resolving the recurring snarl-up on the inter-district mountain pass.

In a memorandum recently submitted to the District Collector, the complainants pointed out that the uncontrolled entry of heavy goods carriers was found worsening the situation in the wake of the New year season. They said the movement of emergency vehicles was at stake with the uncontrolled situation.

“There is not even a single dedicated crane to remove the vehicles involved in road accidents. The delayed action often leads to long hours of traffic blocks on the mountain pass,” said S. Renjith, a member of the volunteers’ group. He said the entry of multi-axle vehicles should be restricted during the festival time as a temporary solution.

In the memorandum, the volunteers’ groups also called for the widening of the sixth, seventh and eighth hairpin curves. Till the completion of the widening works, heavy vehicles should be diverted via Kuttiyadi pass, they demanded.

Meanwhile, police sources said traffic diversions via Kuttiyadi pass were under consideration in the wake of noticing a heavy vehicle flow to the ghat road area. A final decision would be taken after holding a meeting with the District Collector, they said.
