In an effort to curb the spread of glanders, a highly infectious disease affecting equine animals, the Bengaluru Urban District administration has enforced stringent restrictions around the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC).
Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner (DC) G. Jagadeesha on Thursday issued a preventive order prohibiting the movement of horses, donkeys, and mules within a two-km radius of the Turf Club following the detection of confirmed cases. The measures have been introduced to prevent further transmission of the disease and to protect both animal welfare and public health in the city, according to the order.
Two horses stationed at BTC have tested positive for the disease.
Citing the seriousness of the outbreak, the District Commissioner said the Bangalore Turf Club has been officially notified as the epicentre of the infection under the provisions of the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases Act.
Mr. Jagadeesha, who also serves as the chairperson of the District Livestock Disease Management Committee, said “immediate containment steps were necessary given the contagious nature of Glanders”.
Under the order, the movement of equine animals for all purposes, including recreational activities, religious ceremonies, public processions and other events has been strictly prohibited within the notified zone until further instructions are issued.
Mr. Jagadeesha said that Glanders spreads rapidly among equine animals and poses serious risks if left unchecked.
Meanwhile, BTC has decided to cancel the remaining races of the ongoing Bangalore Winter Meeting of 2025-26.
