The absence of Kerala State Chalachitra Academy chairperson Resul Pookutty, who is also the chairperson of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) and the festival director, at the ongoing edition of the festival became a point of contention at the Open Forum held at Tagore Theatre on Wednesday (December 17).

A former general council member of the IFFK criticised Mr. Pookutty’s absence. “The festival has continued to function without the chairperson’s presence. Its smooth conduct can be solely attributed to the organising team which has been working round the clock,” he said.

He also alleged that the Open Forum lacked democratic engagement as the speakers had left the stage while the audience were still awaiting responses.

Responding to the criticism, moderator, C. Ajoy, secretary and IFFK executive director, said that Mr. Pookutty’s absence was due to prior work commitments and that he is expected to arrive on December 18.

“All assumptions are based on misunderstandings and a lack of fact-checking, and it is the vision of the chairperson that we are implementing.” Mr. Ajoy said.
