LDF’s organisational strength in Kannur intact: K.K. Ragesh

The CPI(M) on Saturday (December 13) said the Left Democratic Front (LDF) continues to have a strong base in Kannur district, though setbacks in certain areas would be closely examined. CPI(M) district secretary K.K. Ragesh told the media that the LDF’s performance in district, municipal and block panchayat divisions clearly reflected its organisational strength.

According to Mr. Ragesh, the LDF secured victories without opposition in 10 local self-government institutions in the district, including Anthoor municipality, Panoor block panchayat and eight grama panchayats. In some panchayats, the UDF managed to win by just a single seat.

In the Kannur district panchayat, the LDF improved its tally by one seat, winning 18 of the total divisions. The front maintained its earlier position in municipalities and increased its seat count in places, including the Iritty municipality. Though the UDF won Taliparamba and Sreekandapuram municipalities, the LDF improved its seat share there as well.

He said the LDF also secured a majority in the Iritty block panchayat and wrested control of Kadambur grama panchayat. In Muzhappilangad, where the front earlier had only a slender majority, it registered a comfortable win this time.

Mr. Ragesh alleged that the UDF made a conscious attempt to defeat the Left by aligning with communal and sectarian forces. He claimed that in local bodies where the LDF was leading by a narrow margin, such forces coordinated to work against the Left.

Citing Iritty municipality as an example, Mr. Ragesh said that Congress votes from the previous elections were missing this time. In areas where the Left put up a strong fight, parties such as the BJP, SDPI and Jamaat-e-Islami allegedly voted tactically against the LDF, with reciprocal support from the UDF, he added.
