The central leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has summoned the party’s Manipur MLAs to New Delhi for a meeting on December 14. The development coincided with President Droupadi Murmu’s two-day visit to the State that concluded on Friday.
Former Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh told journalists in the State capital, Imphal, on Friday (December 12, 2025) that the agenda of the meeting was not disclosed.
“We have been called to review the situation in Manipur. We are not aware of the agenda, but a discussion on forming a government is a possibility,” he said at a function marking the observation of the 86th Nupi Lal Day.
Nupi Lal refers to two women-led uprisings (1904 and 1939) in which Manipuri women resisted British colonial policies and asserted their rights and dignity.
Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13, four days after Mr Singh resigned as the Chief Minister. The State has been scarred by ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo people that broke out in May 2023, claiming more than 260 lives and displacing 62,000 people.
State BJP president A. Sharda said the MLAs, including seven belonging to the Kuki-Zo community, have been asked to attend the meeting from 5.30 p.m. The seven are among 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs who have been insisting on a “separate administration” for the community before supporting any bid to form the government.
After the death of N. Kayisii of the National People’s Party, the 60-member Manipur Assembly has an effective strength of 59. The BJP, which has 32 seats, continues to command a majority in the House.
