In a moment of pride for Telangana and the Indian diaspora, Uday Nagaraju, a native of Shanigaram village in the erstwhile Karimnagar district, has been appointed to the House of Lords, the upper chamber of the British Parliament.

His appointment as a Life Peer was approved by King Charles III, based on the recommendation of United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The House of Lords is broadly comparable to the Rajya Sabha in India.

Upon his swearing-in, Mr. Uday will be officially known as Lord Uday Nagaraju or Baron Uday Nagaraju, joining the select list of distinguished individuals chosen for their national and global contributions.

A public policy expert and community leader, Mr. Uday is an alumnus of the University College London (UCL), where he completed his Master’s in Public Administration, the same institution once attended by Mahatma Gandhi.

Recognising early the transformative impact of emerging technologies, Mr. Uday founded the AI Policy Labs, a think-tank dedicated to understanding and shaping global Artificial Intelligence policy. His work in governance, technology, and community advocacy has earned him acclaim.

Dabbling in electoral politics, Mr. Uday contested the 2024 UK parliamentary elections as a Labour Party candidate and secured second place, gaining widespread recognition within the party.

He was born into a middle-class family to Nagaraju Hanumantha Rao and Nirmala Devi. He is married to Gauri Uday Nagaraju, and the couple has one daughter. Mr. Uday spent nearly a decade working at the grassroots level in the UK, serving as a school governor, volunteer, and political campaigner, gaining a firsthand understanding of people’s issues and aspirations.
