The much-awaited election to the vacant Kadapa Municipal Corporation (KMC) Mayoral post is set to be held on December 11 (Thursday).
It may be recalled that the former Mayor K. Suresh Babu of YSRCP had moved the High Court challenging his removal on charges of corruption, as his term would end only in February 2026. Even as this case was pending, he once again moved the court on December 5, this time, challenging the issue of a notification to fill the casual vacancy of the Mayor’s post.
The case came up for hearing on Wednesday, where, in a major setback to Mr. Suresh Babu, the same was dismissed, paving the way for the conduct of the election on Thursday in the form of a special meeting of the council.
Though Mr. Suresh Babu was removed on corruption charges, the YSRCP clearly has the numbers in its favour. The situation has kindled hopes among the party’s senior corporators, who are expected to enter the contest.
However, YSRCP district president P. Ravindranath Reddy and Kadapa MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy have already expressed support to Paka Suresh to don the Mayor’s seat.
TDP plays spectator
With the numbers clearly against them, the TDP has opted to sit out of the contest.
“We only wanted the corrupt Mayor removed and we have succeeded in it. We neither have any interest in his successor, nor do we have the numbers. Hence, we will enjoy the role of a spectator,” said TDP polit bureau member and district president R. Srinivasa Reddy.
Meanwhile, the Revenue Divisional Officer John Irwin promulgated orders under Section 163 of BNSS for a radius of 200 metres from KMC office from Thursday to Saturday (December 13). Similarly, the police department has mobilised sufficient manpower to the KMC to keep the law and order situation under control.
