Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Tuesday (December 12, 2025) said there is a need to change the norm related to the maximum number of liquor bottles that one could store in their houses.

Intervening during the reply to JD(S) member C.B. Sureshbabu during question hour in the Assembly, Mr. Shivakumar pointed out that presently one could not store more than seven liquor bottles at home. “But I keep getting liquor bottles as gifts from those who visit me. The authorities could file a case,” he said.

Earlier, Mr. Sureshbabu accused the Excise Department of prescribing targets on liquor sales to officials and expressed concern that steep targets were responsible for even students consumig liquor.

BJP member S. Suresh Kumar sarcastically remarked that the government should provide permission to gig workers and online sales platforms to sell liquor, too. Responding to this, Mr. Shivakumar asked what was the guarantee that gig workers are not used illegally by some people to get liquor.

Mr. Suresh Kumar said there are indeed instances of people using the online platforms to get drugs too. Taking exception to this, Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara urged the BJP MLA to pass on information in this regard to the government for conducting a probe, if he has any.
