While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the three districts of Tirupati, Chittoor and SPSR Nellore districts, no significant rainfall has been recorded in the three districts as of 2 p.m. on Saturday (November 29).
As per the realtime rainfall information provided by the A.P. State Development Planning Society, many places in Tirupati district recorded very light to light showers, not more than 12 mm, between 8.30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday. However, the sky remained cloudy as the maximum temperatures in Rayalaseema and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh remained below 30C.
The IMD had forecast heavy rain likely in the districts of Prakasam, YSR, and Annamayya, while isolated very heavy rainfall could be expected in SPSR Nellore, Tirupati and Chittoor districts on Saturday.
In a press bulletin, IMD, Amaravati, Director S. Stella said the entire State may receive light to moderate rainfall on Sunday (November 30). Heavy to very heavy rainfall alert has been issued for the same six districts, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall likely in SPSR Nellore, Chittoor and Tirupati districts. A red alert has been issued for the latter three.
Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds with speed 60-70 kmph gusting up to 80 kmph likely at isolated places over South Coastal A.P. and Rayalaseema. Squally winds with wind speed 40-50 kmph gusting up to 60 kmph are likely at isolated places over North Coastal A.P. and Yanam on November 29, 30 and December 1.
Meanwhile, the Cyclonic Storm Ditwah moved north-northwestwards with the speed of 8 kmph and lay centered at 8.30 a.m., close to 80 km east of Jaffna in Sri Lanka, 280 km south-southeast of Puducherry and 380 km south of Chennai. It is very likely to continue to move north-northwestwards and reach over southwest Bay of Bengal near North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts by early morning of November 30.
Meanwhile, Minister for Home Vangalapudi Anitha reviewed the cyclone preparedness in the likely-to-be-hit districts at the office of A.P. State Disaster Management Authority on Saturday. She also spoke with the District Collectors and directed the officials to ensure the National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force teams be kept ready.
All control rooms must be available 24/7 to people and weather alerts should be communicated clearly to officials at the ground-level, she said, adding that precautionary steps should be taken to prevent any loss of life and to minimise property damage.
