Disability affects only the body, not the mind, and it does not come in the way of talent, said NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha.
The Collector was speaking after inaugurating sports competitions, organised for differently-abled on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC) Stadium in Vijayawada, on Thursday.
After interacting with the participants, the Collector said persons with disabilities possess stronger mental resilience than able-bodied individuals. Citing the recent victory of the Indian team in the first T20 Blind Cricket World Cup as an example, the Collector said anyone can achieve success if they have proper support.
He said such tournaments bring out a person’s hidden talent to the fore and urged differently-abled persons to not consider their disabilities as limitations and instead focus on what they can achieve.
The competitions are being organised by the Department of Welfare of Persons with Disabilities, Transgender Persons, and Senior Citizens. District Assistant Director of the department, V. Kamaraju, said competitions were being held for men and women, both junior and senior, in various categories such as chess, carroms, softball, volleyball, running, tricycle race, shot put, and discus throw. He mentioned that more than 300 participants from various schools across the district were taking part in the competitions.
