The Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) has singed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Odisha Bamboo Development Agency (OBDA).
Kannan C.S. Warrier, Director, KFRI, said here on Thursday (November 27, 2025) that the MoU marks the beginning of a long-term partnership built on scientific collaboration, knowledge sharing, and a shared vision for transforming the bamboo sector.
“Odisha has immense natural potential and the KFRI brings decades of specialised research and technical expertise. Together, we can create an impact far greater than what any institution could achieve alone,” he said.
Under the MoU, the first area of cooperation is scientific support for species selection, propagation, and quality planting material production. The KFRI will work with the OBDA to introduce improved nursery practices, micropropagation techniques, and protocols for high-value bamboo species suited to Odisha’s diverse landscapes.
Boosting livelihoods
Secondly, the MoU focusses on capacity building and skill development. The KFRI will conduct training programmes for artisans, self-help groups, tribal communities, and technical staff on bamboo treatment, craft and furniture production, product design, and modern processing methods. The goal is simple: to strengthen livelihoods by strengthening skills.
Third, the KFRI will extend technology transfer to the OBDA. This includes bamboo preservation systems, low-cost treatment technology, improved tools, and product prototypes developed through research. These technologies will help Odisha’s MSMEs and community-level enterprises improve quality, durability, and market competitiveness, the KFRI director explained.
The MoU was exchanged between Dr. Warrier and V. Karthik, State Mission Director, OBDA, in the presence of Odisha Minister for Environment Forest and Climate Change Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia during a national conference on bamboo and medicinal plants at Bhubaneswar recently.
