The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) has registered a suo motu complaint based on media reports of a 16-year-old girl giving birth to a baby boy inside the hostel washroom in Koppal district.

Commission Chairperson Shashidhar S. Kosambe has written to the district collector and the Superintendent of Police of Koppal district regarding the same. KSCPCR has asked the officials to submit within three days the necessary information regarding the action taken by the district administration and directions given to concerned officers.

‘Glaring negligence’

The incident took place on November 26 at Sri D. Devaraj Urs Pre-Matric Girls Hostel where the girl was residing. The Kukanoor Police has registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, against a 23-year-old man who was in a relationship with her on the promise of marriage.

Six others, including hostel staff, teachers, and health workers, have also been booked for alleged negligence.

The Commission’s letter noted that the negligence of the hostel staff was “glaring.” The letter read, “Based on all these factors and in the interest of the girls in the hostel, a suo motu complaint has been registered with the commission.”

The mother and child were admitted to the district hospital after the incident, where they are undergoing treatment. Both are reportedly healthy.
