The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has initiated steps for the construction of a new tank with a capacity of 35 lakh litres on the land owned by the public utility at Thammanam. Steps are also being taken to prevent water shortage within the Kochi Corporation limits following the collapse of the water storage tank at Thammanam, the district administration said in a release issued here.
The situation was assessed via an online meeting, which was attended by representatives of the departments concerned. District Collector G. Priyanka chaired the meeting. The estimated cost of the new tank is ₹12 crore. An estimate of less than ₹1 crore is being prepared for activities including increasing the strength of the soil.
Water supply was hit in the Kochi Corporation after the sidewall of one of the chambers of the twin-chambered tank of the KWA at Thammanam collapsed. The tank, which has a capacity of 1.35 crore litres, was commissioned in 1985. It partially collapsed after the foundation sank into the soil. Emergency measures were taken to resolve possible water shortage, the authorities said.
The Collector also ordered officials to take immediate steps to resolve the water supply disruption in the Pettah area. The cooperation of the National Highways Authority of India was required in this regard, the KWA said in a release. The Collector also directed the Corporation to urgently take steps for the construction of the water tank included in the Amrit project at Pachalam.
