The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has opened its wastewater treatment plants to start-ups developing advanced water recycling technologies, in order to promote innovation under the Brand Bengaluru initiative.
“By allowing start-ups to operate inside functioning treatment plants, the board aims to accelerate research, strengthen circular water practices, and expand the city’s recycled water capacity,” V. Ram Prasath Manohar, Chairman, BWSSB, said.
As the first project under this programme, Boson Whitewater has been granted permission to establish its operations within the Kadubeesanahalli Wastewater Treatment Plant. The company will install its advanced purification systems at its own expense.
The BWSSB will provide access to raw wastewater and assist in linking treated water output to potential buyers, according to officials.
The officials said the model places zero financial burden on the board, while converting the BWSSB facilities into live research and testing grounds. “The initiative will allow start-ups to assess treatment economics, infrastructure constraints, and commercial viability under real-world conditions,” Mr. Manohar said.
Through the Boson’s pilot alone, the city is expected to receive around 70,000 litres of high-quality treated water daily, furthering Bengaluru’s efforts to promote sustainable and decentralised water reuse.
“Bengaluru’s water challenges can be addressed through the ingenuity of its own innovators. By providing physical space and operational access within its plants, the BWSSB aims to strengthen circular water management and move the city closer to long-term water self-reliance,” Mr. Manohar said.
