Northeast monsoon strengthens in south Tamil Nadu

As the Northeast monsoon gathers strength across southern districts of Tamil Nadu, normal life in Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari districts have been disrupted, with moderate to intense showers continuing across the Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts and light to moderate rainfall in Kanniyakumari district.

In the past 24 hours ending at 6 a.m. on Monday (November 24, 2025), Tirunelveli district received an average rainfall of 93.96 mm, with several catchment areas experiencing extremely heavy rainfall. Oothu recorded 232 mm rainfall, Nalumukku 220 mm and Kakkachi received 210 mm. Other locations witnessed heavy to very heavy rainfall (in mm) including Manjolai 190, Ambasamudram 80.40, Manimuthar 66.80, Nanguneri 65, Papanasam 76 and Kannadian anicut recorded 94.80 mm rainfall.

Palayamkottai and Tirunelveli received 54 mm and 46.40 mm rainfall respectively. Several areas within Tirunelveli corporation limits were waterlogged, prompting the civic body authorities to clear clogged drains in the affected localities.

Rainfall at Thoothukudi

Thoothukudi district received an average rainfall of 61.17 mm. In the past 24 hours ending at 6:30 a.m. on Monday, several places recorded heavy rainfall (in mm) including Kayalpattinam 94, Kadambur 93, Tiruchendur 86.30, Kulasekarapattinam 82, Kalugumalai 78, Vedanatham 77 mm, Ottapidaram 72.50, Thoothukudi 66 and Srivaikuntam recorded 65.30 mm rainfall.

As of 7 a.m on Monday, 22,543 cusecs of water has been released from Marudhur anicut and 19,747 cusecs of water has been released from Srivaikuntam anicut into the Thamirabarani river. From Korampallam tank, 6,000 cusecs of water has been released into Uppar odai.

Several low-lying areas in Thoothukudi city, including Adhibarasakthi Nagar, Muthammal colony, P&T colony, Kokkur etc,. were affected by waterlogging. To drain the rain water, 38 permanent pumping stations and 40 temporary pumping stations are functioning across the city.

Tenkasi, Kanniyakumari witness showers

Tenkasi and Kanniyakumari districts received an average rainfall of 57.55 mm and 16.85 mm respectively.

In Tenkasi district, water level at Gadananathi dam, the district’s largest dam with 428.52 Mcft capacity, stood at 82 feet against its maximum level of 85 feet, with an inflow of 1,307 cusecs and discharge of 10 cusecs.

The rainfall record in Tenkasi district in the past 24 hours are as follows (in mm): Kadananathi dam 96, Sivagiri 67, Ayikudi 66, Gundar dam 62, Tenkasi 54, Shencottah 54 and Sankarankoil recorded 32 mm rainfall.

In Kanniyakumari district, light to moderate rainfall continued across the district. The water level in Pechiparai stood at 44.51 feet against its maximum capacity of 48 feet. The water level in Perunchani dam stood at 68.15 feet against its maximum capacity of 77 feet.

Rainfall received in Kanniyakumari district in the past 24 hours ending at 6 a.m. on Monday are as follows (in mm): Pechiparai 37.6, Chiiatr I 32.6, Balamore 31.6, Kaliyal 25.2 mm, Boothapandy 18.2, Kottaram 17, Aralvaimozhi 16.2 and Nagercoil recorded 10.2 mm rainfall.
