Close on the heels of a police constable’s involvement coming to the fore in the ATM cash van robbery case, the Koramangala police have solved the case of kidnapping of four employees of a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) firm from their office in Koramangala on Saturday (November 22). Eight people, including a serving police constable, have been arrested.

The accused have been identified as Zabiulla, 30, a welder, Pavan, 30, a salesman dealing in rejected items from an e-commerce platform, Atheeq, 30, also dealing in rejected items, Bharath, 26, a painter, and Prashanth Kumar, 26, a petrol pump attendant — all natives of Kolar. Other accused are Shabaj Ahmed, 45, a welder from K.R. Puram, Tejas Dave, 30, a garage worker from Ahmedabad, and constable Chalapathy.

According to the police, the accused posed as police officials and barged into a BPO office in Koramangala. Under the pretext of an inquiry, they bundled four employees into a car and kidnapped them for a ransom.

The gang forced the victims to contact a colleague and demand ₹20 lakh for their release. Before this, the accused had compelled them to transfer ₹8 lakh from their bank accounts to accounts controlled by the kidnappers.

Following a complaint, the Koramangala police registered a case of kidnapping for ransom and arrested the accused when they arrived to collect the ransom amount. All eight were produced before court and have been remanded to four days in police custody.

The police have also seized two vehicles and recovered details of the digitally extorted money.
