Vizhinjam, with its new international port, will have an important role in the Kerala government’s plans to promote the development of green hydrogen projects in the State.

The Power department has noted that land will be allocated at this coastal region in the near future for establishing the infrastructure for green hydrogen projects.

“Allocation of minimum 50-60 acres of land near Vizhinjam Port for the purposes of bunkering of Green Methanol and Green Ammonia will be identified in consultation with Revenue department for the installation of Green Hydrogen Hubs,” the Power department said in a November 10 order. The department has given approval to the Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (Anert) for submitting proposals regarding the detailed project report for Green Hydrogen Hubs to the Energy Corporation of India.

Kerala is moving forward with plans to develop a regional green hydrogen ecosystem with Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram as hubs under the Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster (HVIC) initiative. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) had given the go-ahead for the HVIC in Kerala in July 2025.

A hydrogen valley is defined a “geographical region where the production of hydrogen, its storage, distribution, and use are integrated through pilot and demonstration projects.” The proposed HVIC project will include green hydrogen refuelling stations in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, pilot and demonstration projects in addition to infrastructure such as electrolyser banks for green hydrogen production, hydrogen compression and storage.
