Months after the government hiked renewal charges for older vehicles, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has imposed another costlier measure- raising the fitness test fee for all motor vehicles over 20 years old, in a bid to discourage owners from keeping older, more polluting models on the road.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), in a latest notification issued on November 11, said the higher fee slabs now begin at 10 years for commercial vehicles, instead of 15 years, bringing more vehicles under the updated cost brackets.

What are the age-based categories for vehicle fitness tests?

MoRTH has created three clear age groups for fitness testing:

1. Vehicles between 10-15 years

2. Vehicles between 15-20 years

3. Vehicles above 20 years

What are the revised charges for various vehicles?

The fitness test fee for light motor vehicles (LMVs) older than 20 years has been increased to ₹15,000 from ₹10,000.

The notification has made steep revisions to the fitness test fee for heavy trucks and buses older than 20 years. They will now have to pay ₹25,000 for the fitness test, from ₹3,500 earlier.

Medium commercial vehicles in the same age group will now have to pay ₹20,000, and the fitness test of light motor vehicles above 20 years will cost ₹15,000.

The fitness test fee for two-wheelers above 20 years has also been increased to ₹2,000 from ₹600 earlier.

Vehicle types Age category Old rates New rates
Light motor vehicles (LMVs) Over 20 years 10,000 15,000
Heavy-duty vehicles Over 20 years 3,500 25,000
Medium commercial vehicles Over 20 years 1,800 20,000
Two-wheelers Over 20 years 600 2,000
