The Telangana NRI Advisory Committee, on Thursday, deliberated on the proposed Overseas Mobility Bill 2025, and sought inputs from various stakeholders such as academics, diaspora associations, and migrant workers’ welfare and advocacy groups, to come up with recommendations for the safety of Indians working abroad.
Committee members B.M. Vinod Kumar, M. Bheem Reddy and others, interacted with several groups and individuals, on definitions in the proposed Bill, workers, and the need to expand the scope of the document so as to include students and workers.
Discussion also revolved around representation of States, especially those with comparatively larger outflow of migrants, in the Statutory Council. Representation of members of diaspora, and workers’ bodies was also discussed.
Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, who was at the consultation meeting, said that the State Government has been supporting migrants in West Asian countries. He noted that the nature of migration has moved from semi-skilled, or skilled labour to those with proficiency in technology, and other sectors.
He said that the State has introduced special schemes for workers in the Gulf, education for their children, Pravasi Prajavani grievance mechanism, and financial assistance of ₹5 lakh to families of workers who died abroad. The committee will also gather feedback from Gulf-affected districts to shape its recommendations.
