The Mahadevapura police have arrested two persons who worked as biryani vendors during the day and allegedly turned into serial offenders at night, stealing high-end motorcycles parked outside houses.

The accused have been identified as Manu Kumar and Sachin. The police said the duo had married two sisters, and had been running a biryani pushcart business for nearly 10 years.

Explaining the modus operandi, the police said that the accused during the day used to sell biryani on a handcart. After dark, they roamed residential areas and broke the locks of expensive bikes parked outside houses.

The stolen bikes were used for joyrides with their wives, the police revealed.

Investigation also found that the wives knew their husbands used to steal bikes, yet continued to enjoy the rides with them.

With their arrest, the police have have recovered 20 stolen bikes worth ₹37 lakh. The accused are habitual offenders with several cases of bike lifting pending against them in Ramamurthynagar, Mahadevapura, HAL, and Whitefield police station limits, the police added.

BTech graduate arrested

In another case, the Bandepalya police arrested a 30-year-old BTech graduate allegedly involved in over 15 bike theft cases in and around the city .

The accused Rishav Chakravarthy, a native of West Bengal, had come to the city six years ago and was working in a tech company. He was sacked from his job on the charge of stealing and he allegedly started stealing parked bikes, a police officer said.

The police had arrested the accused earlier in a bike theft case and as a reformative measure, counselled him and got him a job in a tech company, but the accused was terminated again.

The police had even placed him in a paying guest facility, but the accused was removed from there after he allegedly stole a phone from one of his PG mates, the police said.

With no job and place to live, the accused would move around the city and steal parked bikes and use them until the fuel was over. He would park the stolen bike on the roadside before stealing the next bike, the police alleged.

The police suspect that he is suffering from kleptomania and needs treatment .

The accused had stolen the scooter on October 29 belonging to Zaid Baig parked outside his house In Mangammanapalya.

Based on the complaint, the police analysed the CCTV camera footage identified the accused on Hosur road near Bosch building where he was using the bike .

Based on his confession, the police recovered 8 bikes worth ₹ 6.5 lakh which he had parked at football ground parking area and ITI park compound.
