A three-day International Conference on Sustainable Brain Health: Advances in Neurochemistry and Neuropharmacology, hosted by JSS College of Pharmacy in association with the 39th Annual Meeting of the Society for Neurochemistry, India (SNCI), started in Mysuru on Monday, November 17.
The event brought together leading neuroscientists, researchers, and industry experts from India and abroad, placing the city at the centre of global discussions on brain health and drug discovery.
The conference received support from major Government of India research funding agencies including Indian Council of Medical Research, Department of Biotechnology, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and National Research Foundation, along with industry partners such as Ceego Labs, Icon Life Sciences, and others.
The inaugural ceremony began with a welcome by Dr. Pramod Kumar T.M., Principal, JSS College of Pharmacy, followed by an address by Prof. Saravana Babu C., Organising Secretary and Head of Pharmacology, who highlighted the objectives and focus of the event.
In his address, Dr. Basavanagowdappa H., Vice-Chancellor, JSS Academy Of Higher Education And Research, Mysuru, spoke about the impact of advanced imaging technologies and cutting-edge devices in neuro healthcare. He emphasised that India, despite having adequate manpower and material resources, still imports many high-end imaging equipment and devices for neuro healthcare. Hence, there is a need for increased research and innovations for the country to become self-sufficient in such technologies, he added.
Prof. Prakash Babu, Vice-Chancellor, Pondicherry University, who was the chief guest, praised SNCI’s role in nurturing young neuroscientists through training, collaborative chapters and international academic platforms. He said basic knowledge about brain health should become a part of early education so that young students learn the importance of protecting the most vital organ in the body.
A major highlight of the event was the inauguration of the Centre of Excellence in Brain, Behaviour, and Clinical Neuroscience Research (BBCNR) at JSS College of Pharmacy, which was recently recognised by International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, marking a significant milestone in advancing multidisciplinary neuroscience leadership in India and strengthening Mysuru’s position as a hub for neuroscience research.
The conference featured 15 international experts from leading institutions including Seton Hall University, University of Nebraska, University of Saskatchewan, University of Toledo and Universiti Putra Malaysia, along with eminent Indian scientists from NIMHANS, CSIR institutes, IIT Chennai, Punjab University, and BITS Pilani.
Key sessions focused on neurodegeneration, neuroinflammation, neuroimmunology, substance-use disorders, gut–brain axis research, pain neuroscience, and the neuroprotective potential of Indian traditional medicine systems.
Ahead of the conference, a five-day pre-conference workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Neurochemical Insights was conducted, supporting the national vision of Viksit Bharat. SNCI also presented its annual awards, including the Suven Life Sciences Pharma Award, Dr. G.M. Taori Memorial Award, Prof. K. Subba Rao Oration Award, and Lifetime Achievement Award. With participation from hundreds of delegates worldwide, the conference reinforced India’s leadership in sustainable brain health research.
