Former Assistant Commissioner of Police T.K. Ratnakumar, who led the investigation into the death of former Kannur Additional District Magistrate Naveen Babu, has entered electoral politics as a Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] candidate. He will contest from the Kottur ward in the Sreekandapuram municipality.

Mr. Ratnakumar, who supervised the inquiry after a case was registered against former district panchayat president P.P. Divya in connection with Naveen Babu’s death, faced allegation from the ADM’s family that the probe was biased and poorly handled. The investigation was conducted while he was serving as ACP in Kannur.

Following the filing of the chargesheet, Mr. Ratnakumar retired from service and has now formally joined the political fray. He said he comes from a “CPI(M) family” and would begin campaigning immediately. The Kottur ward from where he is contesting is considered a CPI(M) stronghold.
