Supreme Court Collegium proposes Chief Justices to three High Courts

The Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai on Thursday (September 11, 2025) proposed Chief Justices to the three High Courts of Meghalaya, Patna and Manipur.

The Collegium has recommended Calcutta High Court judge, Justice Soumen Sen, as Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court. Justice Sen is the senior most puisne judge of the Calcutta High Court. He was elevated to the Bench in April 2011.

Justice P.B. Bajanthri, who is currently the Acting Chief Justice of Patna High Court, was recommended to be appointed its regular Chief Justice. Justice Bajanthri is scheduled for retirement on October 22 this year, and thus may have a short tenure. His parent High Court is Karnataka where his career on the Bench began in 2015. He was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court the same year and shifted back to his parent High Court three years later, in 2018. Justice Bajanthri was then transferred to Patna High Court in October 2021.

Madras High Court’s senior most puisne judge, Justice M. Sundar, was recommended as the Chief Justice of Manipur High Court consequent upon the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice on September 14. Justice Sundar was sworn in as a permanent judge of the Madras High Court in October 2016.
