Infosys co-founder N. R. Narayana Murthy addresses a press conference to announce the winners of the Infosys Science Foundation’s 2025 prize, in Bengaluru, Karnataka, on November 12, 2025.

Infosys co-founder N.R. Narayana Murthy stressed on the need to strengthen national and institutional focus on research for a better India and for a better world.

On November 12, deliversing a lecture on ‘The importance of research for India and the world’ at the announcement of the Infosys Prize, Mr. Murthy said, “Research is this broadening of the mind that leads to unravelling the mysteries of nature, seeing what others have not yet seen, and finding plausibly impossible solutions to the problems faced by mankind. The need of the day for our country is to strengthen our national and institutional focus on research for a better India and for a better world.”

He added that research effort needs the audacity, daring, unbridled imagination and the ability not to be cowed down by failures.

Learning from failures

“Research is also about not feeling defeated by failures; learning from those failures; avoiding those mistakes in the future, and improving. Let us remember the words of Thomas Alva Edison, one of the finest engineering minds, who said — I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work,” he added.

Mr. Murthy said that the winners of Infosys Prize 2025 once again remind us that science and research are not luxuries, but necessities for human survival, dignity and progress.

“Creating such an ecosystem for research is our unfailing duty because, ultimately, research is the only means we have to make India a better nation, and this world a better world. This is the only way that we can fulfil the dreams of our founding fathers. The founding fathers sacrificed their lives to create an India where the poorest child in the remotest village would have good access to nutrition, healthcare, shelter, education and an opportunity to lead a fulfilling life,” Mr. Murthy said.
