The great Keerthana Sahiyta poet Kanakadas Jayanti was celebrated in Yadgir and Raichur on Saturday.

The portrait of Kanakadas was carried out on a main street in a grand procession.

In Raichur, Minister for Minor Irrigation N.S. Boseraju flagged off the procession which began from Kanakadas Circle and concluded at Siddaram Jambaladinni Ranga Mandir, passing through Basaveshwar Circle and Ambedkar Circle.

Chairman of the Karnataka Scheduled Tribes Development Board and MLA Basanagouda Daddal, who inaugurated the stage programme at Ranga Mandir, said that Kanakadas was a great philosopher and writer. He played a key role in the Bhakti movement. Kanakadasa’s keertanas are still existing and showing a path in which lakhs of followers are leading to a good life.

Pranesh Kulkarni, lecturer, gave a special seminar about Kanakadas. He said that Kanakadas was one among 250 poets under the Das heritage. His keethanas are against the caste system and favour spiritualism, which he followed in his life.

MLA Shivaraj Patil, MLA A. Vasanth Kumar and Deputy Commissioner Nitish K. also spoke.

In a similar programme at Yadgir, MLA Channareddy Patil Tunnur said that Kanakadas was a great social reformer. He opposed the caste discrimination, writing many Keethanas.

Deputy Commissioner Harshal Bhoyar paid floral tribute to Kanakadas.

Private organisations also celebrated the Jayanti in a grand manner.
