The Second Judicial Magistrate in Coimbatore on Wednesday remanded the three persons, who were arrested on charge of gang-raping a 20-year-old college student on the night of November 2, in judicial custody till November 19.

Second Judicial Magistrate A. Abdul Rahman visited the three accused at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) around 8 p.m. and completed the remand proceedings.

The three accused, namely T. Karuppasamy alias Satheesh (30), his brother T. Kaleeswaran alias Karthik (21) of Singampunari in Sivagangai district and their distant relative M. Guna alias Thavasi (20) of Madurai district, are undergoing treatment for the gunshots they suffered on their legs during an alleged bid to escape from the police at Vellakinar near Thudiyalur on the night of November 3.

The Coimbatore City Police have deployed policemen in shifts at the ward at CMCH, where the three men are under treatment.

S. Latha, an Inspector attached to the Investigation Wing at the Singanallur station in Coimbatore, has been assigned to investigate the case, said a senior police officer. The case against the three accused was registered at the Peelamedu police station, based on a complaint lodged by the boyfriend of the survivor. The initial investigation and the arrest of the accused were handled by Inspector R. Arjunkumar, Station House Officer, Peelamedu station. The woman Inspector was assigned as the Investigating Officer, considering the nature and gravity of the case.

Accused booked for assaulting Head Constable

Meanwhile, the Thudiyalur police have registered a case against the three accused for assaulting a Head Constable Chandrasekar of Peelamedu police station with a weapon, when they attempted to escape from the police team at Vellakinar on the night of November 3. Mr. Chandrasekar was part of the police team that traced the trio to a deserted place at Vellakinar.
