The Union government has released pending Samagra Shiksha funds to the tune of ₹92.41 crore to Kerala.

Another ₹17 crore from the sanctioned amount of ₹109 crore is expected to be released in a few days.

The funds for the Centrally sponsored Samagra Shiksha scheme that will reach the government account will be transferred to the Samagra Shiksha Kerala (SSK) account after the SSK sends a request to this effect.

The total approved amount for the Samagra Shiksha scheme for 2025-26 is ₹761 crore of which ₹456 crore is the Central share.

Kerala had signed up for the PM SHRI scheme recently after the Union government had withheld Samagra Shiksha funds to the tune of ₹1,158.13 crore.

However, the scheme was put on hold following dissension within the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF). Coalition partner the CPI was especially upset that the agreement was signed without any discussion in the Cabinet or within the front.

It remained adamant about a review or withdrawal of the MoU signed with the Union government. Finally, the Cabinet agreed to freeze the scheme and announced a subcommittee to study the CPI’s concerns on the scheme. It was also decided to formally inform the Union government of the State’s decision.

However, almost a week later Kerala is yet to send a letter in this regard. Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty on Tuesday said procedures were under way and the communication would be sent soon.

The Union government had informed the Supreme Court recently that Samagra Shiksha funds due to Kerala will be released soon. The court was considering a case related to appointment of special educators in the State.

Samagra Shiksha hopes to send another proposal soon for the second instalment. However, uncertainty surrounds further release of funds, particularly once the State sends the communication on PM SHRI.
