Over a year after creation, Kolathur taluk expanded

A year after a new taluk was created in Chennai district with Kolathur as its capital in August 2024, the State government has recently expanded the taluk’s jurisdiction from 6.24 sq.km. to 11.84 sq.km.

Since its expansion by 5.6 sq. km, the taluk’s population has increased from 3.78 lakh to 4.59 lakh.

Kolathur taluk, which had only three revenue villages — Kolathur, Peravallur and Siruvallur — would now have Ayanavaram – I, Konnur, Sembium, and Chinna Sembarambakkam revenue villages, following the reorganisation of boundaries.

Taluks reduced

Ayanavaram, Aminjikarai and Perambur taluks have become smaller by one, two and one revenue villages respectively.

The State government’s decision was “based on a report from the Chennai Collector, recommendations of the Commissioner of Revenue Administration, and in view of the welfare of the general public.”

In August 2024, Ayanavaram taluk was bifurcated, and Kolathur taluk was created with three revenue villages to ensure that welfare programmes reached the beneficiaries effectively.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Revenue Administration had in December 2024 and May this year referred to a proposal by the Collector seeking to reorganise the new Kolathur taluk by including more revenue villages from Ayanavaram and Perambur taluks to benefit the general public. The State government accepted the proposal and issued orders.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had in August last year inaugurated the office for the new taluk. Though there are norms for creating a new taluk, as per the government order issued by the Revenue Department issued on June 9, 2003, they could be relaxed if the area concerned involved areas in metropolitan areas in Chennai, hilly areas in the Nilgiris and areas that were later included in Kanniyakumari districts.
