DMK MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian has said that India firmly believes in and remains committed to ensuring that the rule of the Law of the Sea is applied consistently, fairly, and without arbitrariness by all concerned.

She introduced Prof. Bimal N. Patel, India’s candidate for the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in New York on October 29, 2025. “We are pleased to present the candidature of Prof. Patel, whose work on international courts and tribunals, profound practical and research experience, and expertise in international law and the Law of the Sea, along with his solid experience in building institutions of excellence imbued with the highest standards of integrity, impartiality, and fairness, will all contribute to the work and reputation of ITLOS,” she said. The MP, shared a copy of her speech, with the media here.

She noted that the seas and oceans have become increasingly important sources of economic development, trade, and commerce, creating a greater need for interpretation and clarification of the law of the sea and maritime trade.

“The role of the Tribunal will become increasingly important in the maritime sector of international relations and will be called upon to create better understanding and clarification of the rules of international law of the sea and to uphold the aspirations of the international community arising from UNCLOS, the Constitution of the Oceans,” Ms. Thangapandian said.
