A 30-year-old man died on Monday after he climbed a high-tension electric pole in a drunken state and later jumped down despite repeated rescue attempts by authorities.

According to police, the man, a native of Bihar, whose identity is yet to be officially confirmed, scaled the pole around 7.30 a.m. and remained there for several hours, ignoring pleas from onlookers and officials to come down.

Rescue teams from the Fire Department, Electricity, Transco, Medical and Revenue Departments, along with personnel from the Disaster Response Force (HYDRAA), reached the spot and deployed a skylift vehicle to bring him down safely.

An officer from the Abdullapurmet police said that the motive behind him climbing the pole is yet to be determined.

Despite the coordinated effort, the man suddenly leapt from the pole around 3 p.m., landing in a sand pit below. He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Osmania General Hospital, where he succumbed around 4 p.m.

Officials said the man was suffering from underlying health conditions.

The body was shifted for post-mortem, and further investigation is under way to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
