Expressing concern over the large number of vacant posts in agricultural institutions, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has directed the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) to immediately fill all vacant posts.

Speaking to agriculture students from various parts of the country here on Monday (October 27), Mr. Chouhan said he will send letters to Chief Ministers of all States on the issue. “There should be no compromise with the future of agricultural students at any cost,” he added.

Improve farm education

The Minister said providing quality education in agriculture is very essential for the country. He asked ICAR to study the best global practices and implement suitable measures for improving the quality of education.

He said he will ask Chief Ministers to expedite the filling of vacant posts in agricultural universities and colleges in their respective States and discuss the matter with the concerned Ministers.

Mr. Chouhan asked ICAR to form a team of students to coordinate creative suggestions from agricultural students for improving education and institutional systems. He said there is a need for grading agricultural universities and colleges to encourage healthy competition.

“If we develop agriculture and villages together, migration will stop – this too is nation-building. We must strive for self-reliance so that India’s progress is not dependent on any other nation. A developed and self-reliant India cannot be achieved without the growth of agriculture,” he added.
