The South Central Railway on Saturday announced the renaming of the Aurangabad Railway Station in Maharashtra as the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Railway Station, after the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The move comes three years after Aurangabad city was renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The code of the new station, which falls under the Nanded Division of the South Central Railway, is ‘CPSN’.

“The competent authority has approved the change in the name of ‘Aurangabad’ Railway station of Nanded Division over South Central Railway as ‘CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR’ Railway station with the Railway Code for Station as CPSN,” a statement released by the South Central Railway said.

On October 15, Maharashtra’s ruling Mahayuti alliance government issued a gazette notification to this effect.

Aurangabad was named after the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The Aurangabad Railway Station was opened in 1900 under the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan. Recently, Maharashtra witnessed a controversy over Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, with tensions flaring in Nagpur district.
