The Panjagutta police on Saturday arrested a 38-year-old man for the rape and murder of a woman from Assam, whose body was found near a tiffin centre in Begumpet earlier this week.

The case came to light on October 23 at around 7.20 a.m., when a tea stall owner, Potamachetti Pandu, noticed the woman lying unconscious in front of a tiffin centre. On reaching the spot, he found her dead with visible injuries on her face and body. A bottle of liquor and some food items were found beside the body.

Based on his complaint, a case was registered by the Panjagutta police and taken up for investigation. The body was later shifted to Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem.

During the investigation, police traced and apprehended the accused, identified as Y. Reddappa, 38, a native of Enamallapally village in Nallacharuvu mandal of Anantapur district. He was taken into custody following credible information.

According to an officer from Panjagutta police, Reddappa confessed to the crime during interrogation. On the night of October 22, around 11.45 p.m., he met the woman near Greenlands, Begumpet, and after a brief conversation, they moved to a secluded spot nearby. “They consumed liquor and when the woman resisted his further advances, Reddappa, in a fit of rage, assaulted and throttled her, leading to her death. He fled soon after realising she was unresponsive,” said the officer.
