Work on the first phase of ‘Alappuzha- A Global Water Wonderland’ project under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme has begun. The project aims to transform Alappuzha beach, canals, and backwaters into an iconic global tourist destination. It is being implemented at a cost of ₹93.17 crore.

The work of strengthening the banks of the Vellappally–Shavakkotta canal and deepening the canal has started. Survey procedures on the beach stretch have been completed and piling work will begin soon. At the Punnamada Finishing Point, load testing for construction and preparatory steps for piling have already commenced.

The State government has designated Kerala Tourism Infrastructure Limited as the nodal agency for the project implementation.

₹24.25 crore allocated

The beachfront development, which envisions an ecologically sensitive upgrade of the area, includes the construction of promenade walkways, parking lots, seating spaces, lighting, landscaping, spaces for events, an Indian Coast Guard station, outdoor sports courts and waste management facilities, among other amenities. A sum of ₹24.25 crore has been allocated for the project.

The canal-side transformation aims to restore and revitalise the historic canals of Alappuzha town, reintroducing them as vibrant public spaces while preserving their ecological and cultural significance. Planned works include walkways, seating, lighting, plazas, boat docks, cafes and boat jetty development. A sum of ₹37 crore has been set aside for the project.

An international cruise terminal with parking, marina, experience centre, information kiosks, water adventure zone, restaurant, and toilets will come up at Punnamada Finishing Point at a cost of ₹8.5 crore.

Soft intervention

A sum of ₹4 crore has been earmarked for ‘soft intervention,’ including cultural and heritage integration, community engagement, environmental sustainability, digital and smart tourism initiatives, training programmes, first aid and waste management.

The project is expected to be completed by February 2026.
