The reconstruction of the Alappuzha-Changanassery (AC) road has entered its final phase. Officials of the Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP) informed a meeting of the District Development Committee on Saturday (October 25, 2025) that 95% of the project had been completed. Almost all major works have been finished, except for the Pallathuruthy bridge, which is expected to be completed in the next couple of months.

As per the original plan, the project, aimed at preventing flooding of the road during the monsoon season, was scheduled for completion in 2023. However, the government later extended the deadline. The delay was mainly due to the time taken for approving the revised estimate for the construction of a parallel bridge at Pallathuruthy.

The 24.14-km road is being rebuilt at a cost of ₹671.66 crore under the Rebuild Kerala initiative. On completion, the final cost is expected to touch around ₹880 crore.

Four bridges

The project includes the construction of four major bridges, five semi-elevated flyovers, 14 minor bridges, three causeways, and 64 culverts, among other works. Officials said that work on the Kidangara, Nedumudi, and Muttar bridges had been completed. In the case of the Pallathuruthy bridge, work is making steady progress.

Five flyovers at Pandarakalam, Nazareth Junction, Jyothi Junction, Mankombu and Onnamkara have already been opened to traffic.  Likewise, all the small bridges, causeways and culverts have been opened. Road surfacing using dense bituminous macadam and bituminous concrete has also been completed. Besides, land-levelling work over a seven km has been finished.

The two-lane road with footpaths has a width of 13 m. The AC road work is being executed by the Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society- Evrascon joint venture.
