An elderly man was suspected to have died asphyxiation after a fire broke out in his residence at Vayupuri Colony in Neredmet on Sunday (September 22, 2025) night. The deceased has been identified as 79-year-old Jayaprakash Ramanna.

The villa is located on the service road in Neredmet, between a car showroom and a wine mart. He was living alone on the ground floor of a G+1 villa, while his sister’s family stayed on the first floor. His son works in Bangalore and his daughter is married and lives in Kukatpally. “His sister family went out on Sunday evening when he is suspected to have either heated water to take a shower or used an appliance which triggered a short circuit,” said an officer from the Neredmet police.

The blaze erupted around 8.46 p.m. and thick smoke quickly engulfed the villa, leaving Ramanna unconscious. Neredmet police, alerted through Dial 100, rushed to his rescue and shifted him to a nearby private hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

Cantonment Station Fire Officer R Raghava Reddy also said that the fire appeared to have an electrical origin. “The fridge and switchboards were badly damaged. By the time we reached, he had already been taken to hospital. It took until 1 a.m. to fully douse the flames and finish the combing process,” he said, adding that fire tenders, including HYDRAA, were pressed into service. The police have registered a case and are further investigating the cause of the fire.
