Members of a Joint Action Committee comprising the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS), Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (DSS), Parisarakkaagi Naavu, Team Mysuru, Kannada organisations, and some progressive groups staged a protest in Mysuru on July 18 against the State Government’s proposal to organise kambala (slush track buffalo race) as part of the Mysuru Dasara festivities.

The protest was held near Sathagalli, off the Outer Ring Road, where the government has proposed to conduct the traditional buffalo race during Dasara.

The committee, which has been opposing the proposal, reiterated that while kambala is a respected and popular traditional sport of the coastal Tulu Nadu region, it should not be included in Mysuru Dasara, as it is incompatible with the heritage, cultural identity and religious significance of the world-renowned festival.

The committee adopted six resolutions. It urged the State Government to drop the proposed kambala event, and instead ensure that all existing Dasara programmes are organised efficiently and systematically.

The committee demanded transparency in all Dasara-related administrative processes, including the distribution of passes.

It called for greater recognition and priority for local art forms and traditional sports during Dasara, besides seeking enhanced honorariums and dignified treatment for local artistes.

The committee appealed to the State Government to provide timely assistance to farmers affected by drought conditions across Karnataka.

Expressing concern over the health of noted environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, the committee urged the Central government to initiate dialogue with him and facilitate an early resolution to the issue. It stressed that democratic engagement and dialogue must prevail in addressing public concerns.

Among those who participated in the protest were Maj. Gen. (Retd.) S.G. Vombatkere, former MLA A.T. Ramaswamy, Parisarakkaagi Naavu leader Parashurame Gowda, KRRS president Badagalapura Nagendra, environmental activist U.N. Ravikumar, activist Bettaiaya Kote, and heritage activist N.S. Rangaraju.
